RESPECTFUL HOMAGE TO ACHARYA

I am grateful to U. Ve. Prof. Alwar Swami for giving me this opportunity to pay my respectful homage to U. Ve. Prof. M. A. Lakshmithathacharya Swami. It has been my good fortune to have come to know Lakshmithathachrya from a young age as the illustrious son of Panditaraja U. V. Alwar Tirumalai Iyengar Swami, who was the revered Acharya of my parents as well as myself. Just like his grandfather Tarkatirtha Lakshmithathacharya and the father, Lakshmithathacharya became a renowned scholar of Nyāya and Viśiṣṭadvaita. He also acquired a deep knowledge of many other Śāstras and Kalās. He became one of the pioneers in applying tools of modern information and other technologies for the preservation, study and propagation of many of our Śāstras, and also for initiating several research programs focused on contemporary applications of our ancient knowledge.

A Tribute to Prof. M.A. Lakshmithathacharya - A Visionary with a Scientific Temper

It is with deep respect and admiration that I pen this tribute to my dear friend, philosopher, and guide, Prof. M.A. Lakshmithathacharya. I had the privilege of knowing him for many decades, and our bond grew stronger through our shared passion for Sanskrit and the scientific exploration of ancient Indian knowledge systems.

Prof. Lakshmithathacharya was not just a scholar rooted in the traditions of Śāstra, but also a visionary who embraced scientific temper with remarkable enthusiasm. It was this unique blend of orthodoxy and scientific inquiry that set him apart and enabled him to delve deep into Sanskrit texts, unraveling their relevance to modern science.

Our paths crossed often at various academic and research forums. I vividly recall delivering lectures on topics related to Sanskrit and science, including those on the intriguing subject of Vimana Shastra. In our discussions, his insights were always profound, bridging the ancient with the contemporary. His ability to see the scientific essence in ancient texts was unparalleled, and it was a joy to exchange ideas with him.

My Memories with Prof. M. A. Lakshmithathacharya

Floral perfumes in a garden walk are always transient. Yet it feels pleasant and gets into subtle layers of memory and at every recall it invokes a desire to have the experience once again.

Real Gurus do not teach but lead us to feel the depth of knowledge by experience. These two realities of life narrate my experience with Guru, Prof. M. A. Lakshmithathacharya. I was fortunate to interact with him only on three occasions. Those memories are stored in subtle layers. And at every recall, I wanted to meet him once again.

I asked him about knowledge of Conservation (of biodiversity) contained in Vedic literature- in my first interaction. His reply was crystal clear. “We have many scholars exposed to Vedic literature with their command on Sanskrit language. But they do not have domain expertise in the modern scientific fields. And the domain experts don't know Sanskrit language to explore, comprehend and decipher the contents of Ancient Knowledge Systems. This is a valley of gap in our approach to Vedic literature.”

Remembering Sriman M.A.Lakshmithathachar

Sriman M.A.Lakshmithathachar was an Ajanubahu in build and in scholarship from within. His face radiated brightness. His smile radiated benevolence. His speech irradiated our minds.

He was a person who came from an illustrious lineage of scholarship and bhakti from over a 1000 years. A true embodiment of Sri Ramanuja parampara.
