In the realm of Indian traditional knowledge, the gap in understanding between modern science and our traditional knowledge of yore is glaring. For example many concepts subtly and explicitly elaborated in the Vedic language of Sanskrit often lies unutilized by practitioners of Vigyana (विज्ञान) or what we know now as modern science. In present times it is extremely difficult to find someone with the needed appetite to cross pollinate concepts, ideas and practices available in one domain into another. Few decades back hardly there were any scientific institutions in the country that researched into, say concepts in Vedas/Upanishads, for adding value and enriching existing scientific thoughts. Likewise for instance, hardly were there Sanskrit Universities/Academies/Institutions that looked into cross pollinating concepts/principles in our ancient scripts for enhancing scientific knowledge.

ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಸಂಸತ್ ನ ಮೊದಲ ಪ್ರಕಟಣೆ 'ಈಶಾವಾಸೋಪನಿಷತ್' ಮುದ್ರಣ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಹಳೆಯ ಕಾಲದ ಮೊಳೆ ಜೋಡಿಸುವ ಮುದ್ರಣಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆಗಿನ ಕಾಲದ ಹಳೆಯ ಸಿಲಿಂಡರ್ ಯಂತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುದ್ರಣ. ಆ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಅನೇಕ ಇತಿ ಮಿತಗಳಿದ್ದವು. ಆ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನದಲ್ಲೇ ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಮುದ್ರಿಸಿದೆವು. ಮುದ್ರಣ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾತಾಚಾರ್ ಅವರು ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ನನ್ನ ಅಪ್ಪನ ಜೊತೆ ತಾಸು ತಾಸು ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇಬ್ಬರು ಕನಸುಗಾರರು ಸೇರಿದರೆ ಅವರ ಲೋಕವೇ ಬೇರೆ! ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾತಾಚಾರ್ ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಒಡನಾಟವೂ ಬೆಳೆಯಿತು. ಆ ನಂತರ ಅವರ ಸಾಹಸಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ನಾನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಾ ಬೆಳೆದೆ.
ತಾತಾಚಾರ್ ಅವರು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಅಗಲಿ ಮೂರು ವರ್ಷ ಕಳೆದು ಹೋಗಿದೆ. ಮೇಲುಕೋಟೆಯ ರಾಜಬೀದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದು ಹೋಗವಾಗೆಲ್ಲಾ ಅವರ ಮನೆಯ ಕಡೆ ತಿರುಗಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಒಳಗಡೆ ತಾತಾಚಾರ್ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಆರಾಮ ಕುರ್ಚಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತಿರಬಹುದೇ? ಮಾಮೂಲಿನಂತೆ ಅತಿಥಿಗಳು ಇದ್ದಾರೆಯೇ? ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಹೊರಬಂದು ಒಳಗೆ ಕರೆಯಬಹುದೇ ಎನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಳ ಕೋಣೆಯಿಂದ ಮಡಿಶಾಲು ಉಟ್ಟ ಆ ಸುಂದರಾಂಗನ ಸ್ಪುರದ್ರೂಪಿ ಮಡದಿ ಗೋದಾ ಮಾಮಿ ಹೊರಬಂದು ಈಗ ಮಾತನಾಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಕನಸು. ರಾಜಬೀದಿ ಬಿಕೋ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಿದೆ.

Mandayam Ananthanpillai Lakshmithathacharya (MAL) Swami's mother and my mother are sisters. Through his paternal lineage, as a member of the Mandayam Ananthanpillai Thiruvamsa, he is also my brother. He was one of my closest relatives and, from a young age, served as a mentor in many ways.
When my mother was pregnant with me, she stayed for a few months at her sister's (Lakshmithathacharya's mother's) house in Tirunarayanapuram. During this time, Pandita Raja Shri U.V. Azhwar Tirumala Iyengar Swami, Lakshmithathacharya's father, instructed my mother to bathe daily in the Kalyani Pushkarini, worship the Pushkarini, the Jnanasvattha tree, Jnanapiran, and serve Narasimha, who resides on the mountain. My mother followed this routine daily and returned home only after attending the Bhagavad-Vijaya Kalakshepam conducted by Alwar Tirumala Iyengar Swami. She would take food only after completing these rituals.
Lakshmithathacharya often said that it was because my mother followed these practices that I became deeply involved in sampradaya (tradition) matters later in life.
