ಪ್ರಾತಃ ಸ್ಮರಣೀಯ ವಿದ್ವಾನ್ ಪ್ರೊ.ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀತಾತಾಚಾರ್ಯರು

ನಾನು ಪ್ರೊ.ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀತಾತಾಚಾರ್ಯರನ್ನು ಪ್ರಥಮ ಬಾರಿ ಕಂಡದ್ದು ೧೯೬೪ನೆಯ ಇಸವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಲಾಲ್‌ಬಾಗಿನ ಗಾಜಿನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶ್ವಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಪರಿಷತ್ತು ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿ ಡಾ॥ ಎಸ್.ರಾಧಾಕೃಷ್ಣನ್ ಉದ್ಘಾಟಿಸಿದ ದಿನ. ಯುವಕರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀತಾತಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ತೇಜಃ ಪುಂಜದಂತೆ ಚಿದಗ್ನಿಕುಂಡ ಸಂಭೂತರಂತೆ ಹೊಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಮೂರು ದಿನಗಳ ಆ ಸಮಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂದರ್ಭ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅವರು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲೂ ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದಲ್ಲೂ ಓಜಸ್ವಿಯಾದ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ ಜನರನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸಿದ್ದುದು ನನಗೆ ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಆಮೇಲೆ ಅನೇಕ ವರ್ಷ ನಮ್ಮ ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಮೇಲುಕೋಟೆಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಶತಮಾನೋತ್ಸವದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕಂಡಿದ್ದೆ.

ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಯ ಕಾಮಧೇನು

ಕನ್ನಡದ ನೆಲದಿಂದ ಉದಿಸಿದ ಅಪರೂಪದ ವಿದ್ವದ್ಮಣಿ “ಶ್ರೀಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿತಾತಾಚಾರ್ಯ”. ಇವರು ಮೇಲುಕೋಟೆಯ ಚರಿತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಚ್ಚಳಿಯದ ಹೆಸರು. ತರ್ಕ, ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟಾದ್ವೈತ, ದಿವ್ಯಪ್ರಬಂಧ, ಅಲಂಕಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುಪಮವಾದ ಪಾಂಡಿತ್ಯ ಇವರಿಗಿತ್ತು. ಇವರು ಚತುರ ವಕ್ತಾರ. ಕನ್ನಡ, ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂದಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿಯಾಗಿ ಪ್ರವಚನ ಮಾಡುವ ವಾಗ್ಮಿ. ತಮಿಳು ಮಾತೃಭಾಷೆ. ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಆತ್ಮಭಾಷೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಮಿತ್ರಭಾಷೆ. ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ವ್ಯವಹಾರ ಭಾಷೆ. ಎಲ್ಲದರಲ್ಲೂ ತಡವರಿಸದೆ ದೀರ್ಘಕಾಲ ಮಾತಾಡಬಲ್ಲ ವಕ್ತೃತ್ವ ಇವರದು. ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ-ಸಂಶೋಧನ-ಸಂಸತ್ತನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಕಟ್ಟಾಳು. ಆಚಾರ್ಯ ರಾಮಾನುಜರ ಉಪದೇಶಸುಧೆಯನ್ನು ವಿಶ್ವದ ವಿದಾಂಸರ ಮನ-ಮನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ತಲುಪಿಸಿದ ವೇದಾಂತಕಿಂಕರ. ಶಿಸ್ತು-ಕ್ರಮಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುಬಿದ್ದವರು. ಅಡೆತಡೆಗಳಿಗೆ ತಲೆಬಾಗದೆ ಹೊತ್ತ ಹೊರೆಯನ್ನು ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆ ಒಯ್ದ ತ್ರಿವಿಕ್ರಮ. ಇವರ ಸಾರಸ್ವತ ಸೇವೆ ತಪಸ್ಸಾಯಿತು; ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಕೈಂಕರ್ಯ “ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ” ಆಯಿತು, ಮಾರ್ಗಶಿಲ್ಪ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರ ಸುವರ್ಣಪಥವಾಯಿತು.

My interactions with Prof M.A. Lakshmithathachar

In the year 2014, I and a colleague of mine were trying to do some work (by way of offering our services) for the revival of the ancient intellectual tradition of this country. We were convinced that the only way to resuscitate our ancient vidyas in today's world was to dismantle the Western ideas and theories that stood in opposition to the Vedic tradition through the critical methods and tools of Nyaya shastra. Towards this end, I and my colleague had been meeting various traditional Sanskrit scholars of this country trying to convince them that they should come together for the purpose of reviving the tradition of tarka. In October of that year, we made a presentation on this theme at a Round Table Conference held in Hyderabad. In all these interactions, the response we got from the scholars was quite typical: everyone seemed to agree that the idea was interesting but almost nobody showed enthusiasm for actually taking the idea forward. One could sense that there was a general feeling around that it was not feasible in today's world to revive the tradition of tarka.

A Tribute to U. Ve. Prof M.A. Lakshmithathacharya Swami- From a Soldier-Disciple

Encouraged by our father, Prof. M.A. Shama Iyengar, my elder brother Prof. M.S. Alvar and I first read the Srimad Bhagavatam as teenagers in school. Despite studying in a Jesuit institution in Pune, the text left a deep impression on us. As schoolboys, we often listened to the Mahabharata and Ramayana at the feet of our mother, M.A. Vengadamma, and our eldest brother, M.A. Rajan, who recited Kumaravyasa's Bharatha with extraordinary sweetness. My father persistently encouraged us to read selected Upanishads, which we did—albeit reluctantly.
