M. A. Lakshmithatachar - My Perspective on the Giant

MAL as the world knew him was a truly exceptional man, who strode this planet like a colossus amidst us all ordinary mortals. Mere words are not sufficient to describe his true persona, but I personally experienced him to be a 'daring, energetic & a robust go-getter'.

There was nothing too big or too small for him and there was absolutely no challenge that would deter him. "Perseverance against all odds" was his sole motto, when it came to functioning in life.

Shree Gurubhyo Namaha

It is indeed a great opportunity and privilege to write about the great Sri M.A. Lakshmithathachar. I feel truly blessed to be part of this family, having grown up and spent time with my beloved Chaami Mama, as we affectionately called him.

My Periayya, Sri M.A. Lakshmithathachar, was not just a renowned scholar in Sanskrit and Indian philosophy, but also a deeply compassionate human being. He dedicated his life to preserving and advancing the wisdom of ancient Indian knowledge systems. As the founder director of the Academy of Sanskrit Research in Melkote, he created a space where traditional knowledge met modern science, inspiring countless scholars and researchers.

MY BELOVED PERI MAMA (CHAMI MAMA)

I like Chami Mama (or Peri Mama as I used to call him) very much. He used to encourage me a lot. He was very fond of me. When I had just started working at his Kriya office, he told me, "You have such a wonderful mother. You had such a wonderful father. You are a wise boy."

He was a great person. His hallmark was his simplicity. In spite of his stature, he exuded humility.

Chaami Mama-a true embodiment of generosity and love

He is known to the world as Lakshmithathachar, Swami Lakshmithathachar and more. The word that resonates with me is "Chaami mamal". From a very young age, I had heard about his remarkable achievements, such as being a great Sanskrit scholar, renowned for his eloquence in the language, and his expertise in the teachings of Srivaishnavism as expounded by Ramanujacharya. I remember him trotting across India In search of "taale gari" inscriptions. But to me, as a child, he was the one who patiently cut mangoes and encouraged everyone to eat. He would take us near the cows, show us around the garden at the Sanskrit Institute! He would visit us in Bangalore, bringing home so much jackfruit that my stomach would hurt from overeating. I remember how the cows and peacocks at the Sanskrit Institute would go wild as soon as they heard his loving voice.
